Advent Day 5 - Leave wooden shoes by the fireplace

This is a tradition that we did when I was a little girl. We had wooden shoes because my parents had traveled and brought us some, but tonight, my boys are going to use their regular shoes.

Children in the Netherlands believe that Saint Nicholas arrives on December 5th (the eve of his saint day) along with Black Peter. Black Peter would jump from roof to roof, sliding up and down chimneys, leaving gifts in the little wooden shoes left by the hearth. Children would fill their shoes with hay and carrots for Saint Nicholas' horse and Black Peter's mule.

CHECK BACK TOMORROW TO SEE IF ST. NICK AND PETER STOPPED AT OUR HOUSE.

This is WAY too cute! I am taking notes!

Fun fact: If the children were bad, Black Peter would bag them up and take them to Spain for a year. Why Spain, I have no idea, but that's what Dad (Served his mission in Holland, where the shoes on Dec. 5th are tradition) told me.
